Indirect is the way to go,saw something similar @ Serious Eats/Food Lab interior gets heated up gently & more evenly.I used medium flame and flipped steaks every 5 minutes but use an instant read thermometer – every grill setting is different

How are getting sear marks if there is no flame under the grate?
